Starting Safe and Staying Safe with Dynamix

Ensuring the safety of every worker is paramount, yet the unpredictable nature of accidents underscores the importance of constant vigilance. Those operating in dynamic environments, such as manufacturing and logistics, face heightened risks, particularly when working with moving machinery. However, with appropriate tools and education, these risks can be effectively managed.

Dynamix Recruitment, in Auckland is an RCSA Member on a mission, steadfastly committed to safeguarding the well-being of its candidates. Through an ongoing campaign dubbed "Start Safe, Stay Safe," the organisation endeavours to equip its workforce with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate their roles safely and confidently ensuring that when they start safe, they stay safe.

"We formulated our safety program in response to an incident where an employee suffered a finger injury due to a machinery malfunction. While fortunate in its outcome, this event prompted a discussion within our organisation regarding how we could proactively prevent similar occurrences," stated Lisa Bennett, Managing Director of Dynamix.

"We have since dedicated ourselves wholeheartedly to this cause, offering comprehensive safety sessions to both new hires and existing employees.

“These sessions underscore the critical importance of pausing to assess one's surroundings thoroughly. It involves encouraging individuals to query themselves: Is my work area tidy? Are there potential trip hazards? Am I equipped with the appropriate gear? Have I received adequate training on the machinery? Is there any observable damage to important safety guards?”

Dynamix utilises a comprehensive communication strategy, distributing the "Start Safe, Stay Safe" message through various channels including on-site toolbox training sessions, email correspondence, posters, and pocket cards. Leveraging social media platforms and distributing safety pamphlets across worksites, the objective is to embed the safety mantra into the daily routines of employees until it becomes ingrained as second nature.

“Ultimately, it’s about getting people to take some responsibility for their safety and getting people to think about what they are doing – we are all so busy with life and it is easy for people to let themselves get distracted, start safe, stay safe aims to get people to focus, STOP, THINK, DO, explains Lisa.

"For our new employees, we've developed pocket-sized cards bearing the safety message for easy reference, and we have included it in our induction. Additionally, we've observed the profound impact of sharing real-life workplace incidents, despite the sometimes-unsettling nature of the content. It prompts individuals to pause, reflect, and prioritise safety—a vital step in ensuring their well-being."

The approach has gained widespread acceptance among Dynamix's clients, with numerous clients engaging the agency to conduct on-site safety presentations for their permanent staff as well.

Lisa highlights the ongoing commitment, with consultants addressing groups as large as 60 to 70 individuals, reinforcing the importance of safety culture within the workplace. This proactive stance not only underscores Dynamix's dedication to the welfare of its candidates but also bolsters the reputation of the recruitment and staffing industry as one that prioritises the safety and satisfaction of its workers.

Lisa emphasises her personal involvement, underscoring accessibility, and care towards both employees and candidates.

"Educating large groups on-site demonstrates our commitment to their well-being. It's about showing that we genuinely care, reinforcing the notion that our candidates are valued individuals."
